چکیده

The presence of clusters of granular and vacuolar bodies in the cytoplasm of mature erythrocytes of many, but not all, species of urodeles is well established. They were extensively studied with vital staining techniques, but no reliable evidence about their cellular function was obtained. Various authors have described them as parasites, artefacts, centrosomes, nuclear emissions, Golgi bodies, and segregation apparatus (Dawson, 1932). Dawson and Charipper (1929) made a survey of urodele erythrocytes in an attempt to correlate the presence or absence of these bodies with the

An Investigation by Electron Microscopy of the Nucleoside Phosphatase Activity of Amphibian and Mammalian Erythrocytes

Amphibian and mammalian blood was washed in isotonic saline, fixed in glutaraldehyde, and then stained in the ATPase medium of Wachstein and Meisel. The blood cells were subsequently postfixed in osmium tetroxide, embedded in epoxy resins, and studied by electron microscopy. The plasma membranes of amphibian erythrocytes, from the newt Triturus cristatus and the frog Rana esculenta, were staine...

Cytolysomes and Mitochondrial Degeneration

In 1957 Clark described vacuoles, in the cells of the pro:,imal convolutions of the kidneys of the newborn mouse, which contained mitochondria within them (7). Similar bodies have been found in cells of the proximal convolutions of rat kidney 6 hours following ligation of the ureter (14). These were identified with large acid phosphataserich bodies seen in frozen sections of cold formaldehyde-f...

ERYTHROPOIESIS DURING AMPHIBIAN METAMORPHOSIS I. Site of Maturation of Erythrocytes in Rana catesbeiana

The site of maturation of the erythroid cells in premetamorphic, metamorphic, and adult stages of R . catesbeiana has been investigated by comparing the percentages of immature, hemoglobin-containing erythroid cells in circulating blood, liver, spleen, kidney, and bone marrow. In both premetamorphic and thyroxine-treated tadpoles, the liver was found to be the main site of maturation of the red...

Widespread infection of the Eastern red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) by a new species of Amphibiocystidium, a genus of fungus-like mesomycetozoan parasites not previously reported in North America.

Given the worldwide decline of amphibian populations due to emerging infectious diseases, it is imperative that we identify and address the causative agents. Many of the pathogens recently implicated in amphibian mortality and morbidity have been fungal or members of a poorly understood group of fungus-like protists, the mesomycetozoans. One mesomycetozoan, Amphibiocystidium ranae, is known to ...
